Alberton High School

Welfare & Fundraising

At Alberton High School, our commitment to community extends beyond the classroom. We believe in nurturing a culture of care and support within our school and the wider community, with values that put you at the heart of everything we do.

Within our school, we extend a helping hand to families in need through regular initiatives. We assemble food parcels stocked with non-perishable essentials and personal hygiene items, ensuring that our fellow community members have access to the necessities they require. While we are fortunate to receive generous donations of fresh produce from local businesses, we recognise that consistent support is essential to meet the diverse needs of our community.

As part of our dedicated Welfare Committee, we proudly stand behind two impactful child-centred organisations:

Othandweni Feeding Scheme

Originating from a humble home garage in Katlehong, this scheme began by serving a few children with funds sourced from a monthly pension grant. Since its inception, it has flourished, now providing nutritious meals to over 350 children. [School Name] has been actively involved in supporting this initiative since 2007.

Siyabonga Children’s Home

This compassionate haven offers refuge to children facing challenging family circumstances, including abandonment or abuse by primary caregivers. At Siyabonga, these children find not only safety but also love and care. We proudly contribute to their journey by offering support to ensure access to education and empowering them to pursue their dreams.

Our commitment to welfare extends beyond words. It’s a demonstration of our values in action – a testament to our dedication to fostering a community where every member thrives.

Join us in making a difference, because together, we can create a brighter future for all.

WELFARE INITIATIVES
Easter Drive
Easter eggs are collected from learners in the school and then packed and distributed to the two above schemes. Lunch and sweets are arranged for the children. At Siyabonga an Easter egg hunt is also arranged.
Christmas Drive
Each year a different theme is chosen like stationery, sports equipment, school shoes, and books. Lunch is also arranged for the two above-mentioned schemes.
Food Drives
On a termly basis where a need arises to collect food to feed our families in need at school, we host a food drive where learners are requested to bring non-perishable food items divided into categories to make food parcels. This is extremely helpful.
Animal Welfare Drive
We run a drive in September to collect cat and dog food mainly that goes towards helping feed the (sterilised) cats at school and donations are also given to the Alberton SPCA.
Blood Drives
Four blood drives are hosted by SANBS and arranged by our Peer Promoters. We regularly achieve at least 50 units of blood.
Wheelchair Drives
We have been collecting bottle tops for more than 10 years that have successfully been exchanged for wheelchairs that are donated to care facilities or to individuals who have been identified as someone in need.
General Drives
Other support that we are involved in include
• Sunflower Day – bandanas/tote for hope
• CHOC Day – Cupcakes for Cancer
• Flip Flop Day
